Last Weekend of Movies for 2009

by Chris Padgett on Dec.30, 2009, under Favorite Movie

The movie industry has set new records this year. As a whole the movie industry reached 10 billion dollars and this is the first time this mark has ever been reached. There were some really good movies in 2009 and it would be hard for me to name a top 10 list. Instead of focusing on the best movies for the 2009 year, I think I will spotlight the movies that finished in the top 10 for the last weekend in 2009.

Avatar Movie

No big surprise to see which movie was on top. Avatar was the leading movie at the box office this past weekend. It looks like it took a lot of money to make this movie and now the investors associated with Avatar are reaping the rewards from their creation. James Cameron did an excellent job with Titanic and pulled that movie off nicely in the 90′s. He now finishes the new decade off with a big-time Hollywood movie and people are paying money to see the new Avatar movie.

Top 10 Movies for Last 2009 Weekend

1. Avatar

2. Sherlock Holmes

3. Alvin & the Chipmunks

4. It’s Complicated

5. Up in the Air

6. The Blind Side

7. The Princess and the Frog

8. Nine

9. Did You Hear About the Morgans?

10. Invictus

A couple of true story movies making the top 10. I do love my true story movies and the Blind Side may just be the best movie in 2009. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I have been hearing really good things about it. Some have even said the Blind Side is the best movie they have ever seen. It’s great this movie had so much success and I would like to see more Hollywood movies that showed how some of these athletes went from rags to riches. All professional athletes in the NHL (hockey), MLB (baseball), NFL (football), and NBA (basketball) are making a king’s ransom each year. I’m sure there is a lot more success stories out there and hopefully with the popularity of the Blind Side, we can get a chance to see more movies like this. The other true story movie is also sports related with the South African rugby team and it’s called Invictus. I love true story movies and I am a big sports nut too. So true story movies based on sports will always get a thumbs up from me.

Probably the most surprising thing about the movies in 2009 is the fact they did set an all-time record in sales at the box office. The world-wide economy has been in the news a lot in 2009 and how we are all struggling to make ends meet and no one has a job. A bad economy leads to the greatest showing ever for the movies industry is a little shocking. No matter how hard times get, it seems we will still go see the movies we want to watch in the theaters. I wonder with the economy predicted to be better in 2010 if we will see a new record next year. A lot will depend on which movies come and how many blockbusters hang around at the theaters. An early glimpse now at the movies slated for 2010 and I don’t see it being that big of a year in the movie industry. At least not a 10 billion dollar year; where each month the industry would need to be pulling in close to 1 billion dollars a month. I guess we will have to wait and see, but I think we skip a year and 2011 will be the new record that breaks the 2009 movie record.

New Movies Topping the Box Offices

by Chris Padgett on Dec.01, 2009, under Favorite Movie

It’s been a good season for movies. Some really good movies are now playing and this would be a good time to take the family to the theaters. I know there is at least a half of dozen movies I would like to see right now. I’m sure you have 1 or 2 that you would like to go and watch too. Here is the way the movies came out of the box offices this past weekend:

1. The Twilight Saga: New Moon

2. The Blind Side

3. 2012

4. Old Dogs

5. Disney’s A Christmas Carol

6. Ninja Assassin

7. Planet 51

8. Precious

9. Fantastic Mr. Fox

10. The Men Who Stare at Goats

The most attractive movie on the top 10 list is 2012 to me. I think this would be right up my alley. I love the Aztecs Calendar and how it predicts the end of time. Apparently our world is going to end in another 2 years in December of 2012. This movie touches on that historic calendar made by the Aztec people. The movie playing at theaters is not a true story, but does mix a blend of truth and non-fiction together and gives us a scenario for our last day on the planet Earth. Do you think the world will end in December 2012? I guess no one really knows the answer to it, but it has sure done well at the box offices and this new movie 2012 is going to be a heavily watched movie for the next month at theaters. Do you see any other movies on the top 10 box office list that you would like to go see? There are a couple of movies that are based on true stores like the Blind Side and the Men Who Stare at Goats. I would like to watch both of these movies. The true story movies are the best ones and Hollywood needs more of these types of movies.

Upcoming Weekend Movies Hot

by Chris Padgett on Nov.03, 2009, under Favorite Movie

We shall see if This Is It can continue at number 1 this weekend as some new movies hit theaters nation wide. The biggest may be The Christmas Carol with Jim Carey. This new 3D movie with Jim Carey should be the new number 1 movie, but we will have to see how some other new comers do too. The Box and The Men Who Stare at Goats are two more new movies people will have to choose from at the theater this weekend. That right there is a nice list of new movies to go along with the new Michael Jackson movie and Paranormal Activity which has done well at the box office the last few weeks. There is still another movie that should draw a lot of interest and it’s The Fourth Kind. This movie may be the next Blair Witch Project as it tries to display itself as a true story movie about alien abduction.

Which new movie would you like to see the most?

A. Jim Carey’s Movie The Christmas Carol

B. The Fourth Kind (True Story Movie on Alien Abduction)

C. The Men Who Stare at Goats (Inspired by True Events)

D. The Box (Cameron Diaz Thriller Movie)

I think all 4 of these movies would make great choices this weekend. The Christmas Carol has a huge advantage over the other 3; since it would be more suitable for young children. If the kids go to the theaters this weekend; then Jim Carey should easily take the top spot away from the Michael Jackson fans who have packed the theaters for his new movie This Is It. A lot of buzz about the Fourth Kind and if it’s Internet popularity carries over to the box office; then the Fourth Kind should rank 2nd this week at the box offices. It will certainly be interesting to see how this weekend’s top movies play out. Other movies making their debuts will be: Precious; Collapse; and Splinterheads

Latest Results from the Box Office

by Chris Padgett on May.25, 2009, under Favorite Movie

The top movies now playing at theaters are as follows:

1. Night at the Museum

2. Terminator Salvation

3. Star Trek

4. Angels & Demons

5. Dance Flick

These are the movies people wanted to see over the Memorial Day weekend. I’m sure there was an increase in sales across the board as the longer weekends usually give people more time to watch a good movie. These movies look pretty good judging by the previews and it should be interesting to see which ones remain in the top 5.

The Night at the Museum looks like a funny movie. It also has a very interesting appeal to see all of these characters from the past come to life for one night. I guess it is just for one night based on the title of the movie, but I haven’t gone to see this one yet. It did very well over the long weekend and this was the top movie in America that people wanted to see.

Monsters vs. Aliens didn’t make the top 5 at the box office, but this movie has did better than any other movie in 2009 so far. It does remain in the top 10 box office sales and it finished at number 9 for this past weekend. The X-Men movie is also staying strong at theaters and it placed in the 6th position.

I hope I get the chance to go see some good movies soon, because this has been a great year to visit a theater or the drive-in for a top notch movie. I haven’t been to a good drive-in since I was a kid. I would like to visit one that is located about 60 miles from me. I think they only show the older movies at this drive-in that is located in Blue Ridge, Georgia. I will have to double check on that or if there is anyone that lives around the North Georgia mountains could tell me if the drive-in located in Blue Ridge shows recent movies or movies that have been out for a year or so.

Two new movies start this weekend that might challenge these top 5 movies. Up and Drag Me to Hell look like solid contenders. Also starting this weekend will be Departures, Pontypool, Pressure Cooker, and What Goes Up. Let me know if any of these new movies coming out interests you. I have watched a few previews on television about these new movies and one or two of them do look like they would be good. Enjoy your visits to the theater or the drive-in this week and be sure to let me know what you go to see.

Star Trek Tops Box Office Sales

by Chris Padgett on May.13, 2009, under Favorite Movie

No big surprise last weekend on which movie was the most seen. The box office sales kept going and going for the new Star Trek movie that made a big splash and is now the number 1 movie in America. I haven’t seen it yet, but it does seem to be a good one and the Star Trek fans are pleased. This movie goes back to the early days and you get to look at things from the beginning. I’m sure it’s an interesting movie and even though I’m not a big Star Trek fan, I would like to see the latest movie that started playing in theaters on May 8th.

The number 2 movie and last week’s number 1 is X-Men Origins: Wolverine and this movie is really doing well. The Wolverine is the most popular comic book character ever and this was decided back in March of 2008. It seems movie goers like the Wolverine and they are turning out in bunches to get a look at this one. I would also like to watch the X-Men and see what all the hype is about here. I don’t fully understand the story of the X-Men, but it seems everyone likes this new movie a lot.

The 3rd most popular movie playing in theaters right now is Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. 2nd week in a row that this movie has did well at the box office and it looks like someone finally got a new, creative idea in Hollywood. I do get tired of all the movies that have the same story line and they just have different actors or actresses playing the parts.

Rest of the movies making the top 10:

4. Obsessed

5. 17 Again

6. Next Day Air

7. The Soloist

8. Monsters vs. Aliens

9. Earth

10. Hannah Montana The Movie

I would have thought Next Day Air would have finished higher in the standings, but this just proves how good the movies are right now. It looks like Miley Cyrus barely hung on over the weekend and her new movie Hannah Montana is clinging to the 10th spot. Monsters vs. Aliens has been very strong ever since its release and this movie just keeps racking up the numbers.

Surprisingly Disneynature got the 9th spot on the list with their new movie Earth. This is a documentary and you don’t often see this in the movies. Maybe we have a more educated generation growing up before our eyes and that’s the reason Earth made it up to number 9.

angels-and-demons_tom_hanks

Tom Hanks is the headliner this week and he’s been on all the talk shows and early morning shows promoting his new movie Angels & Demons. I could see this movie jumping over Star Trek for that number 1 position in the box office sales. Tom has did some really great movies in his career and I’m sure this one will be another solid performance from his long list of spectacular movies.

Other movies starting up on Friday will be; The Brothers Bloom; Big Man Japan; The Big Shot Caller; Daytime Drinking; Management; Not Forgotten; and O’Horten.

Knowing Wins Best in Show at the Movies

by Chris Padgett on Mar.25, 2009, under Favorite Movie

In its opening debut, the new movie featuring Nicolas Cage went straight to number 1 called Knowing. This looks like a very good movie and if you have seen the previews you know why. This movie may just hold on to that top spot if the positive buzz continues to spread around about this movie. I have the movie Knowing high on my list of movies I would like to see most. The rest of the top movies playing right now are:

1. Knowing

2. I Love You, Man

3. Duplicity

4. Race to Witch Mountain

5. Watchmen

The top 3 movies on the list were all new movies that just started last weekend. It seems the new movies coming out is what people want to see most and the 2nd and 3rd weeks haven’t been kind to some movies lately. If there is going to be a new movie that goes to number 1 this weekend, I will go out on a limb and say The Haunting in Connecticut will grab the top spot. This is true story that I think will get a lot of attention this weekend. 12 Rounds is another new movie that should crack the top 10 this weekend. The kids will want to see Monsters vs. Aliens and this movie will probably land in the top 3 with so many young audience members it will be attracting.

As for now, the new movie Knowing sits on top of all the other movies currently playing and I would love to go see this one! Other notable movies are The Last House on the Left in 6th position and Slumdog Millionaire continues to show a strong posting with an 8th spot at the box office this week. This was the first week that Paul Blart: Mall Cop didn’t finish in the top 10, since its opening act in mid January.

Top Movie: Race to Witch Mountain

by Chris Padgett on Mar.19, 2009, under Favorite Movie

The top movie over the weekend was Race to Witch Mountain. The movie has Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson starring in it along wtih AnnaSophia Robb, Ciaran Hinds, Carla Gugino, and Garry Marshall. I thought this movie would come out on top after all the figures came in from its opening weekend in theaters.

Race to Witch Mountain
YouTube Preview Image

This movie topped some other good movies that are also currently playing in theaters across the country. The Watchmen lost its top spot position and fell to number 2 on the box office list. Another movie that made its debut was The Last House on the Left and this thriller had an impressive showing as movie goers flock to see this one too. The Last House on the Left was number 3 on the list and Taken followed it at number 4. I would love to go see all 4 of these movies and I’m sure they would be very entertaining.

I know director Danny Boyle won an Oscar for the movie Slumdog Millionaire and it’s been staying in the top 10 movies list for a long time now. Anyone planning to go see this one on Blu-Ray might have to wait just a bit longer. The new movie Miss March that started last Friday didn’t do as well as I had predicted. It seems the competition was too stiff at the movies last weekend or this really isn’t a movie people want to see right now. Miss March did crack the top 10 with a 10th place showing on the list. There may not be enough buzz about this new movie and it may not even make the top 10 next week.

From the top 4 movies at the box office right now, I think The Last House on the Left is the one I would want to see the most. It would be the movie that would get my vote from the top 4. What would be the movie you would want to see the most?

The new movies that will be coming out this week are Duplicity and one that looks really funny called I Love You, Man. Nicolas Cage will be starring in a new movie called Knowing and this movie should place in the top 5 this upcoming weekend. I think Knowing will stay in the top 10 and this looks like a possible number 1 movie. Tom Hanks will be playing in a movie called The Great Buck Howard. It doesn’t look like Tom has a big role in this movie and I doubt it makes it into the top 5 box office movies in its opening weekend. These are the 4 most notable movies that will be starting up this weekend. The theaters are getting a little crowded right now with so many good movies playing, but this makes it better for all of us that enjoy going to the movies.

Top Movies Now Playing in March

by Chris Padgett on Mar.10, 2009, under Favorite Movie

A new movie released last Friday took top honors at the box office this week. Madea Goes to Jail was in the top spot and Tyler Perry’s new movie has fallen to number 2 as Watchmen is now the new number 1 movie playing. A lot of people have been waiting for the release of Watchmen and now everyone can go see it.

Watchmen is a movie based in 1985 that has a doom day’s clock that revolves around the USA and Soviet Union’s tension back then. They throw in a few super heroes to give a really unique look and twist to things and it seems this was enough to bring in the crowds. This movie is not for the younger audiences and does have a Rated R tag associated with it. The film was shot in Vancouver Canada, but produced in the United States. This is an action movie that has thriller scenes and fantasy roles being played out. All of those that like the science fiction types of movies will enjoy the Watchmen.

Taken is still holding on in the top 10 and this movie continues to do well at theaters. Taken was the 3rd top selling movie at the box offices this past weekend and I still haven’t seen it yet! I do want to see this movie and see all things this parent does to try and get back his daughter from the kidnappers that took her. This movie really looked good on the previews and judging by the numbers of people going to see Taken; I believe it would be a good one to watch.

Other movies making a claim on the top 10 include Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Slumdog Millionaire, Coraline, and Fired Up!. These movies might be in trouble this week with a lot of new ones coming out and I know one is going to lay a stake to a top 10 claim this weekend. Race to Witch Mountain is going to be a good one to go see this upcoming weekend. The former wrestler turned actor Rock is appearing in this one and Race to Witch Mountain will be one the whole family can see. I’m not sure how it will compete with Watchmen for the top spot, but it should be interesting to see which one wins. There might just be a 3 way battle for the top spot, because another good movie starts Friday called The Last House on the Left. The younger viewers will probably take Race to Witch Mountain ahead of all the other movies, but The Last House on the Left is a thriller type movie that will get a lot of attention. My predictions for this week’s box office sales:

1. Race to Witch Mountain

2. Watchmen

3. Last House on the Left

4. Miss March

5. Taken

It is a good time to be visiting the local theater and a lot of good movies will be playing this weekend. Going to see a movie at the theaters is a great experience and we all need to do it from time to time. Be sure to let me know which movie you plan to see this weekend or what movie you would most like to see. Don’t forget the popcorn!

Georgia Man Number 1 at the Movies

by Chris Padgett on Mar.02, 2009, under Favorite Movie

The man that lives just down the street from me is taking the box office by storm. Tyler Perry’s movie Madea Goes to Jail is tops at the box office! Well maybe he isn’t ”just down the street” but if that street was 40 miles long and you know being in Georgia it would be called Peachtree Street; then Tyler Perry would live down the street from me. I actually live about 40 miles North of the Atlanta, Georgia area where Tyler Perry is from, but his new Madea movie is hot!

There have been other Madea movies over the years and I guess Madea has a fan following. It showed at the box office this past weekend and beat out some really good movies for that top spot. The state of Georgia and everyone associated with Tyler Perry’s new movie should be really proud. Great to see a man living in the Peach State give those big time Hollywood actors, actresses, and filmmakers a run for their money.

Rounding out other movies this past weekend that did very well was the Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience at number 2; Slumdog Millionaire with an impressive showing at number 3 on the list and the movie Taken falling to number 4.  All of these movies looking to bounce back this upcoming weekend and see if they can give Madea and Tyler Perry any competition at the box offices. Very nice job Mr. Perry and I guess we haven’t seen our last Madea movie yet!

Movies opening this week are Watchmen, 12, Everlasting Moments, Sherman’s Way and Tokyo!. The movie 12 will be on limited release but it looks like a pretty good movie if 12 is playing in your local theaters this weekend. It may seem a little familar with some and it’s about one juror on the jury stand that tries to convince others that the murder case they are deliberating on is not as it appears. We will see if this one juror is able to get the others to go along with his theory on the murder case. I think this one looks the best for March 6th but it isn’t being released nationwide for some reason. I expect the new movie Watchmen to do very well and some have named it the most anticipated movie for 2009. It is a movie about super heros but before you make plans for the kids to see this movie, keep in mind it is Rated R and isn’t one for the kiddies to see. Warner Brothers should have a great weekend with Watchmen this week and all the new movies will be trying to track down Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail. Enjoy the movies this week and be sure to let me know what you plan to see this weekend.

Movie Updates

by Chris Padgett on Feb.17, 2009, under Favorite Movie

No big surprises at the box office over the weekend. I have been talking about this movie for over a month now and it was the number 1 movie over the weekend. Jason stormed through all the other movies in theaters and the new Friday the 13th movie is number one right now. It beat out He’s Just Not That Into You for the top overall movie.

A lot of people went to see this horror movie classic that was made into a new movie and it debuted on February 13th or last Friday. I was thinking it might go number 1 at the box office but you never know with these things. A family movie for kids is easier to predict than the adult movies and I’m sure Friday the 13th is for adults. I know a lot of kids like to watch these movies too, but they usually don’t make it to the theaters to watch it. The man wearing a hockey mask and slashing up people is back and people are paying to let Jason scare the you know what out of them!

The 3rd movie over the weekend was Taken. I am hearing some good things about this movie and it looks like a good one to go see too. The number 4 movie is for kids and it is called Coraline.

dakota-fanning-coraline

Dakota Fanning in Coraline

A few good movies to go see at the theaters right now. Movie watchers can seek out a PG-13 movie that has Dakota Fanning as the voice of Coraline Jones or go see Jason do his thing in Friday the 13th. There is also a couple of more choices in between or you can check out the 5th top movie called Confessions of a Shopaholic. I think I would be a shopaholic if I had enough money, so it’s hard to do when your poor. Don’t forget about Paul Blart: Mall Cop still playing at theaters nation wide too.

Two new movies will be starting this upcoming weekend and they are Fired Up! and Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail. I live just north of the Atlanta area, so I know who Tyler Perry is. I’m sure many of you know who Madea is and this will be her return to the big screen. The other movie “Fired Up!” will be about a couple of guys ditching football camp, so they can go be with the cheerleaders and attend cheer camp. I’m sure these two new movies will do well this weekend, but not sure any movie will pass the new Friday the 13th movie.
