Do It Yourself?
Well some of the hardware store commercials we see on television today, encourage us to “do it yourself”. I’m not sure that’s always wise. We had a bad experience by doing the job ourselves and it was in an effort to save money. We wanted to build a deck on to our house and decided to do it ourselves and buy the cheapest materials possible. We wasn’t concerned with how it looked, just something sturdy to stand on. The first year it was fine, but apparently the wood we chose wasn’t good for more than that. We notice the wood was beginning to get weak and our deck was already suffering termite damage. The treated wood was more expensive, but we wanted to save money, and that was a big mistake. I guess knowledge is power and we certainly didn’t have it; when we decided to build our own deck.
So we had to finally bring in a real builder and use real wood and it cost us more all together, than if we had just did this to begin with. There is also a helpful DVD at DoItYourself.com and I think if we would have had a video like this, we could have prevented our errors. I would recommend getting this video before you take on any home projects. You can also find a lot of articles and helpful information in the forums at DoItYourself.com. Even if the upgrades are temporary and you are just making them, so you can increase the value of your home, you still want to be sure you do it right. If you sell your home with just a few touch-up jobs here and there, you can dramatically increase the value of your selling price. Be sure you do it right and know exactly what materials and how to do it; before you even begin your projects.
