The car of the future is closer than you think. It might just be a lot lighter than you think too. It’s possible we could be driving around in plastic cars one day. This is probably something you haven’t gave much thought to and it’s a new one on me too. What are the advantages and disadvantages of plastic parts over the steel cars and parts we drive and use today? My first thought goes toward the environment. All of the old cars rusting in junkyards now and the steel parts that are buried in the ground are not going away anytime soon. These old car parts will remain in our soil for many years. It would seem plastic would be a better environment choice and would rot better, right? Well plastic materials make the headlines a lot and how it takes a long time to turn into dust too. This is why it’s important for us to recycle our plastic and avoid putting it in landfills and other dump sites for trash. I can’t say for sure, but even though plastic takes a long time to dispose of, it would still be much faster than the steel parts. I think we can give a “check mark” to the plastic parts over the steel parts; when it comes to our environment.
How would safety play into the cars of tomorrow? If we did use plastic over steel would it be safer on the roads? For protection in auto accidents; then there is no doubt steel would win. However, if the impact from the other driver is a car made of plastic, how much damage could it really do? I know just about everyone has lost a friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor, or someone in a car accident. As a society we must change this pattern and perhaps plastic cars is the answer? If we could lower the death rate on our highways from automobile accidents; then I am in favor of plastic cars now!
I can think of one more important issue for comparing plastic cars to steel cars and that would be the price tag. You know using plastics to create cars would be much cheaper than the prices we pay for our steel materials. I think if the cars of tomorrow are made with 50% plastic and 50% of all the other materials, it would cut the cost in half. Plastic parts in our automobiles would be much cheaper. They might not last as long as the steel parts do, but even if you factor in the frequent changing of parts, plastic would still be the better bargain. I think from the viewpoint of money, consumers would prefer to buy a plastic car over the cars we use today.
These are some of the things that come to my mind about the car of the future. Do you have anything else you can add to this discussion? Please reply and help me look at some new angles about plastic cars and plastic parts. I would like to know what your thinking and if you think plastic is a good idea or just something you’re not going to see in your lifetime.
