College Football Championship Game

by Chris Padgett on Nov.30, 2008, under Blogging

The real college football game championship will take place next Saturday in the SEC Championship Game. Forget the BCS rankings and all of the teams that are way over ranked in the standings. I’m not sure why teams like USC Trojans and Ohio State are even in the top 10. Just too many good football teams in the country to have teams like this in the top 10. The Flordia Gators and Alabama Crimson Tide are the two best teams in the nation and even with the lack of help from voters, they still managed to find their way up to the number 1 and 2 spots in the country.

The game on Saturday with Alabama and Florida will be the best game of the year. This doesn’t mean the score will be close, but we get to see the best two teams in college football go head to head with each other. This isn’t always the case and the BCS rankings have really messed the college football scene up. We know the South has the best football players in the country and we prove that every year. We still have to take a back seat to the over-hyped teams in college football, but we do get our own championship game just for Southern fans.

The Crimson Tide and Gators will actually be making a little history on Saturday and this is the first time since the BCS rankings started, that we really get to see the best two teams settle it on a football field. The game will be played on a neutral field in Atlanta, Georgia at the Georgia Dome. So the SEC Championship Game is going to be the National Championship Game this year and we finally get to see the best two teams in the nation going at it! Eat your heart out college football, you may can keep up down in the polls for most of the season, but the true cream rises to the top. The best two teams in college football are teams from the South and we get to decide our own National Winner this year in college football.

Toys for Christmas

by Chris Padgett on Nov.29, 2008, under Favorite Blog

It’s the season for giving and there is no shortage in children giving parents their Christmas Lists for the one day of the year they love the most. Yes, December 25th is Christmas Day and this day is even more popular than birthdays with the kids. They can hardly go to sleep Christmas Eve Night, knowing they will get to unwrap their gifts when they wake up. If you’re having trouble coming up with gift ideas; then just ask the kids, I’m sure they will give you plenty.

The toys aren’t just for the little kids either and our older children like them just as good. If you have a child entering their teens or even early 20′s, they will want to unwrap a toy or two on Christmas Day too. They do make toys for their ages and I know the Nintendo Wii or Nintendo ds is a very popular item with the older kids. You’re much better off getting them a gaming system than something more dangerous like a motorcycle, 4 wheeler, or hunting riffle and they will ask for these type of presents.

I’m not sure how households without kids and toys react on Christmas Day. I know in my household we have had toys being unwrapped for the last 30 years or so. If it’s not the kids tearing off the Christmas wrapping paper; you have the grand kids following in their footsteps. It just seems its a never ending process and I’m sure the toy companies are grateful for this. It’s just not Christmas without good food, family, friends, and of coarse toys!

Michael Myers Reinvented by Jordan Crowder

by Chris Padgett on Nov.29, 2008, under Uncategorized

The popular killer appearing in Halloween movies has just been given a makeover and in a way that only filmmaker Jordan Crowder could do. He did a follow up to his popular YouTube video Horror Friends and targeted Michael Myers.

Michael Myers New Look

YouTube Preview Image

Another great sample of the type of work Jordan is doing. He isn’t just a horror guy, but he’s a movies guy. He is going to be someone that is producing them in Hollywood someday and we are all lucky enough to get a glimpse of him now; while his works are accessible online. I think Mr. Crowder has a bright future ahead of him and I look forward to the day I can stand in line at my local theater and purchase a $9 movie ticket to see one of his works.

Just in the small sample of Michael Myers reinvention, you can see the quality of work Jordan uses and his eye for so much detail. These are charteristics that every good movie need and going the extra mile to get a graphic or something else included is what separate the good movies from the bad ones. Let’s hope that Jordan never loses the passion he has now and he can make that work for him later in life. Stay tuned and you can see more of the talent Jordan has with his videos at YouTube.

Favorite Christmas Songs

by Chris Padgett on Nov.29, 2008, under Favorite Singer

christmas-songs.jpg

What are your favorite Christmas songs? They are a lot of popular ones to choose from and not sure I could just pick one song as my favorite. I know many of us like the traditional songs and these are the ones everyone knows the words to.

Silent Night

Jingle Bells

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Deck the Halls

The 12 Days of Christmas

Frosty the Snowman

White Christmas

All of these great Christmas songs I consider classics and most people can sing a few lines to each one of these songs. Other popular Christmas songs that you hear playing on the radio a lot are: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Mary Did You Know, Silver Bells, Blue Christmas, and Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. I love hearing these songs on the radio and you get to hear them sung by many different singers. Some famous singers even put out holiday albums and will showcase all of the Christmas Carrols they sing well. Do you have a favorite artist when it comes to one that sings Christmas songs good? I always like the Statler Brothers and I thought a lot of their Christmas songs were good. They use to have a special that came out each year and you could hear them and other famous guests singing Christmas songs. I don’t think a Statler Brothers Christmas comes on anymore, but I have seen old episodes of the show appearing on RFD-TV. This is the station for rural America and RFD-TV is also the place that Imus in the Morning appears after losing his spot on the NBC networks. I like to watch this channel from time to time and I hope they show some more old episodes of the Statler Brothers Christmas this year.

A Favorite Christmas Song of Mine

Great song by Alabama and Christmas in Dixie is one of the songs I always stop and listen to when I hear it come on the radio or see it on television. Sometimes it just isn’t Christmas yet; until we hear one of our favorite Christmas songs being sung. I think this song and the one about a boy wanting a hippopotamus for Christmas are two of my favorite Christmas Songs that you may have never heard before. Do you have a favorite Christmas song that you think many have not heard before? Please be sure to let me know which Christmas songs you like best and which ones do you have to hear, before you consider it being Christmas time.

World’s Oldest Woman Dies

by Chris Padgett on Nov.29, 2008, under Blogging

It was a sad day this week in Shelbyville, Indiana where Edna Parker met her last day in this world. The slender woman from Indiana had a lot of days and a lot more than most people see. Just take her husband for example, he passed away from a heart attack in 1939 and Edna continued the 20th century without him by her side. Most marriages don’t last 60 years and it’s even more rare to find a marriage that one spouse survived longer than the other by more than 60 years. The 21st century came with the scare of Y2K and Ms. Parker shot right by those times and was able to see George Bush get elected two more times and witness the first black president Barack Obama get elected too. So just how old was this lady from Indiana? I can tell you that she was born in the 19th century and died in the 21st century and you know the 20th century lasted for 100 years. So we know she had at least 100 years under her belt living in Indiana.

Edna didn’t just lose a husband in her lifetime, but she also had to bury two sons as well. She didn’t give us any tips on living a long life, but she has stated in the past we need more education. I think that’s a good message to send out and hopefully her long-life on this planet will allow that message to reach people. More education means we know more about things and the more we know about something, the more effective we can be in dealing with it. Her family does say that she didn’t worry much and she was a slim woman, so maybe those are two keys right there to her survival in living such a long time. The survival game started for her way back on April 20th of 1893 and would last for 115 years and 220 days. She now passes on the legacy to the next oldest woman in the world which goes to Maria de Jesus living in Portugal and she is only a few months younger than Edna and was born in the same year of 1893 on September 10th. I’m sure many will miss Edna Parker that took her last breath in a nursing home in Shelbyville, Indiana at the ripe old age of 115 years old.

Your Favorite Movie Now Playing on the Laptop

While computers have certainly changed the way we have done things these days, it gets no different with its little brother the laptop. The laptop computers are just as good as the desk tops and they can do so many things these days. The big popularity with laptops is a lot like cell phones. We love our cell phones because we can take them with us every where we go and it’s that convenience that makes our laptops so popular these days.

Henry Rollins on IFC Channel

by Chris Padgett on Nov.29, 2008, under Favorite Sitcom

Henry Rollins has a very interesting way of telling jokes and being a comedian. He first was in the music business and use to be in a band called Black Flag. You then started to see Mr. Rollins appearing on a few Hollywood movies and now we have his comedy act that tours the world. He isn’t really a joke teller in the normal sense, but he tells stories of his early days and other things he thinks audiences will like. Some of it is really funny; while some other parts of his act aren’t really that great. I just seen a recent showing of his comedian act on the Independant Film Channel or IFC. I would give him a 7 on this performance with 10 being the best. It’s something to set the DVR to and watch one day when you got nothing else to do. It’s not the type of show you want to miss your favorite sporting event or prime time show for. I’m not sure how good his musical career was or is going, but I wouldn’t quit the day job quite yet if I was Henry Rollins. He is a very good story teller and he scores a 10 on that part of his act. He does deliver things in his act with honesty and he doesn’t hold back with the tongue any either. His routines are not for the kids, but go check him out sometime when your looking for something to do and you’re an adult.

Number 1 Song by Tim McGraw

by Chris Padgett on Nov.28, 2008, under Favorite Singer

The number 1 Tim McGraw Song

YouTube Preview Image

Its took a while to get here, but the top Tim McGraw song is now official! Don’t Take the Girl was a super huge hit for Tim and this song was a big part to putting him on the country map. It sometimes just takes one song for people to know who you are. Some singers use that platform to create dozens of other songs but never seem to find the magic they had with that first big hit. This isn’t the case with Tim McGraw and he’s put out a lot of quality songs over the year. He had a great hit to launch his career but he didn’t rest there and continues today releasing hit after hit.

The song Don’t Take the Girl wasn’t Tim’s first song and was actually the 5th song he released. It was the first song that went to number 1 on the Hot Country Charts and this song is still being played on the radio today. This song talks about two young children to start with and how they grow up together through life. The man in the song has to ask various people along the way to not take the girl and it’s great the way a simple message works throughout their lives. If you never listened to the lyrics of Don’t Take the Girl, you really should sit down and listen to this story.

Don’t Take the Girl came out in April of 1994 and 14 years later it remains one of Tim McGraw’s finest songs. I hope you liked the top 10 countdown of Tim McGraw songs and I got your favorites on the list. He’s done a lot of really great songs since 1994, but to hear Johnny in the song asking people “don’t take the girl” is the top song ever by Tim McGraw. You can go back and review the other 9 songs in the countdown on my blog here and listen to the best songs from country superstar Tim McGraw.

Digital TV is Coming

by Chris Padgett on Nov.28, 2008, under Favorite Sitcom

We only have a couple of more months to get ready for the digital airwaves to start coming in to our television sets. People with antennas or “rabbit ears” on their sets won’t be able to pick up digital television programming in 2009.  You still have about 3 months to get a cable or satellite provider to help with this new change. I think the majority of us are ready for the change, but they are still some people out there that haven’t adjusted to the changes yet. If you want your televisions to still work, you must get a converter box or sign up with a company that offers television programming. You may just want to go ahead and buy a new tv too and get one that has HD capabilities. This is a high definition picture that brings out the clearest picture possible. There is going to be more and more HD programming in the near future and now would be a good time to take advantage of high definition. A new television and a converter box will be sitting on a lot of tv stands when the spring of 2009 gets here. So just be prepared for the digital age that is on the horizon, but you don’t have to worry about this if you already subscribe to satellite or have a tv cable company.

Football Day in America

by Chris Padgett on Nov.27, 2008, under Blogging

Today is one of the best football days in America. It’s not Super Bowl Sunday, but there might just be as many people combined that will watch all the pro and college football games that will be on tv today. Today is our Thanksgiving in the states and when we fill our belly full of good food. I know most of us will be making second and third trips to fill up the plate with turkey and dressing as we lay around and watch football on television all day.

The NFL games will get started with the Detroit Lions as usual. This is the 12:30 East Coast Time game that always comes on first for Thanksgiving. Its tradition in the motor city to play football in the Dome in Detroit. I always like rooting for the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving and use to love watching Barry Sanders on this day. He’s no longer with the team, but they do have Calvin Johnson on their team and he was a good wide receiver in Atlanta at Georgia Tech. So I have a hometown guy I can root for; while I gobble down my Thanksgiving fixings. The Lions will be hosting one of the best teams in the NFL this year in the Tennessee Titans. Not sure the Detroit Lions can win on Thanksgiving Day this year, but I will still enjoy watching them the same.

Two other NFL games will make up the day today. After the Lions/Titans game will be the 4:15 East Coast Time game and the Seattle Seahawks will be traveling down to Texas to play those Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have a lot of fans around the country so I know a lot of people will be tuning into this game. It should be interesting to see if Terrell Owens has another big day; after he caught passes last Sunday for more than 200 yards. The NFL Network will feature the night game on their station and this will start at 8:15 East Coast Time. The night game on Thanksgiving will feature the Arizona Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles. I believe pro football fans will be curious to see how Donavan McNabb plays in this one and he might just show up against the Cardinals, since this game will be on a national stage.

College football fans will have a Thanksgiving night treat too as we get to see a battle in Texas. The number 4 team in the nation Texas Longhorns will be looking to pound their state rivals; the team from Texas A&M. I believe a lot of college football fans tuning in for this one will be rooting for the Texas A&M team and see if the underdog can pull a upset over the team in Orange. So just a fun football day in America and we will have the opportunity to see 4 good games on television today. What game do you look forward to seeing most? If you have a team in the fight on Thanksgiving day; then I wish your team luck! Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving day and make sure you don’t eat too much today.

Terrorists Attacks in India

by Chris Padgett on Nov.26, 2008, under Blogging

In the over night hours in Mumbai, India a series of terrorists attacks are taking place right now. Many are reported injured or killed and information is still coming in on this breaking news story. It seems to be a major terrorist attack at this point and it was a co-ordinated and thought out attack on this city in India. Hopefully it is over now and there could be as many as 9 locations affected by these attacks. Hotels and a train station were targets during these attacks and one group has just claimed responsibility, but officials are not aware of this group. So a lot of things are unclear right now and I’m sure we will learn more when daybreak arrives in the country of India. These attacks happened before 3 AM their local time and it seems strange to have terrorists attacks taking place at night. No Americans have been reported dead or injured right now, but there could be some hostages that are American. Too early right now to say for sure how many Americans are involved and just how much damage these attacks has caused. Mumbai is the new name for the area formerly known as Bombay, India.

DNA to Bring Back Neanderthals?

by Chris Padgett on Nov.25, 2008, under Blogging

The woolly mammoths may be making a come back if scientists have their way. They believe the can bring back the great woolly mammoths that roamed the Earth many ages ago and are now extinct from our planet. I’m sure there is a lot of upsides to this and the attention would be enormous if your local zoo suddenly had a live woolly mammoth on display.

The science doesn’t stop there and if they can use DNA to bring back the woolly mammoths, they should be able to bring back the Neanderthal man too! I know that sounds hard to believe, but it might just be possible with all the advancements in technology and it would serve a purpose for mankind. No one is certain if the Neanderthal man could speak or not, so bringing back a real one would certainly answer that question. I’m sure many other advantages would be there for the taking too, if we could bring back things like woolly mammoths and the Neanderthal man.

There is strong opposition about the use of DNA technology and the uses of stem cell technology. The Catholics are strongly opposed to using stem cells and DNA for recreating human parts or in this case humans. It is being discussed right now if we should bring back the Neanderthal man and we might just have to watch our tongues if we use that famous line “so easy a caveman could do it“. I’m all for technology and I think bringing back life that is now extinct would help us answer a lot of questions about our world and our species and bring us one step closer to finding out why we are really here and how we got to this point as humans.

Top Movies Before Thanksgiving

by Chris Padgett on Nov.25, 2008, under Favorite Movie

As predicted the new movie Twilight was a sensation at the box office over the weekend. It brought in 70 million dollars in its opening weekend to the people that created this hot new movie. It finished above the popular James Bond movie called Quantum of Solace. Mr. Bond’s movie surpassed the 100 million dollar mark for its second place finish this past weekend. I guess Bond isn’t even man enough for a few vampires from Forks, Washington in the top movie Twilight.

Other movies making the list was Disney’s animated movie Bolt at number 3, the 4th place movie was Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and rounding out the top 5 was the movie Role Models. The movie I want to see the most is Changeling and it did well again with a 6th place finish for this true story movie. The movies will be a nice place to be this Thanksgiving week and I’m sure many high school students will find time to watch Twilight over the holidays. A new movie will open up on Wednesday night in most theaters across the country called Four Christmases. A good Christmas movie on the eve of Thanksgiving would be a great way to spend the night with family and friends. Reese Witherspoon does star in the new comedy movie Four Christmases and should do well this upcoming weekend. I’m not sure if any movie will have the power to over take Twilight this weekend and I fully expect people of all ages to make it the number 1 movie at the box offices for a 2nd straight week. Be sure to let me know if you plan to watch any of these great movies playing right now or if you plan to go see them this week.
