The team that was being built up as the best guys ever in Trojan Land went down hard Thursday Night to a team that had already lost two games on the year. The Oregon State Beavers took down the mighty Trojans 27 to 21 and end all speculation of this team winning a National Title in college football. The game had nothing to do with big plays or fancy play-calling that made the Beavers the victors in this one. The game was mainly based on a running back from Oregon State going right up the middle on what was being called “the best defense in the nation”.

So why does USC lose this game? How does the best defense in the nation give up 27 points? Why is this team the best to ever play at USC? Well those questions can be answered by the first game of the season. There was way too much weight that USC got credit for after going on the road and beating the Virginia Cavaliers with authority. Everyone quickly assumed that USC was just that good and no one ever took time to look if the Virginia team was just that bad. If folks would have been smart, they would have seen UCONN do the same thing to the Virginia team and they won handly 45 to 10 and showed the country that Virginia wasn’t a very good football team. Instead of taking the time to factor that in, everyone just wanted to punch the ticket for USC in the Title game this year.

Now the PAC 10 has been struggling and they continue to lose all of their non-conference games. So USC had no quality opponents left and needed something that would help them make a legitimate claim to the National Title Game this year. So since the chance to prove it on the football field wasn’t going to be available this year; we get to hear how this team is the best ever from Southern California. If the media could convince voters that this team was better than all of the rest, they could ride to Miami in that fashion. As strange of a strategy that might be, it was actually working and people all over the country was repeating the same words that the 2008 USC team was better than any other team ever at USC. Now the cold hard truth comes into play and we see USC isn’t even a top 25 team in the country right now. This team did nothing all year to be considered the best and now a national television audience got to see it for themselves. USC has no ammunition left for this year and they are done in 2008.

USC is going to face a lot more than the loss of the game and the loss of the title shot this year; as recruits all across the country will be 2nd guessing their choices to go to USC. The recruiting will get hit hard from this loss on national television and the elite recruits in the Nation will now be looking for other schools to go play football at. The USC program is already looking pretty weak for next year anyways and now they will lose prize recruits because they couldn’t beat a Oregon State team on the big stage. I wouldn’t even be surprised if Pete Carrol calls it quits after this year and makes the jump back to the NFL. The mighy Trojans are no longer mighty and even the New England Patriots have a better excuse why they lost this year already.

Let’s just hope the sports stations, college pregame shows and talk radio let it be known that the 2008 USC Trojans went from the best team ever at Southern California to one of the most over hyped teams in the nation in only 3 games. USC did not deserve to be ranked higher than Georgia with 4 wins and Oklahoma with 3 wins; while they only had 2 wins on the season. Kids all across the country might be eating their Halloween candy before the USC Trojans get their 4th win this year. You can officially mark the Trojans off the list and now we can actually focus on the real college football teams this year.

USC Shows True Colors

So now we all await the Kirk Herbstreet side of the story. Kirk must of had a rough Friday morning waking up and I’m sure when he first woke up his first thought had to be “was that just a nightmare?”. No Kirk! USC really did lose and now you have to go to work and face the National audience and let us know why USC lost this game. I’m sure your not man enough to admit the better football team won, so I look forward to hearing your views on this game and what USC did wrong to lose this game on National Television. I am curious if ESPN will still run those commercials of you and Pete Carrol on the bus and your acting like that you’re avoiding his phone calls. You and Pete really need each other right now and I hope you two can still be the best of friends when USC is playing some school like Southeastern Nevada in a bowl game this year that is sponsored by Alaskan Auto Parts. I’m sure Corso will help you out as usual, but you might want to lay down and take this one like a man.

Now if you can excuse me for one moment, I think I will go off with my friends and neighbors from the South and celebrate this one. You know how we like to celebrate in the South?

Celebration Time

I’m sure you have seen the pictures on television of a bear in Alaska that is next to a stream catching salmon as they swim upstream in large schools. A hungry bear will eat the whole salmon to begin with, but if the bear continues to catch them at will they will soon just eat the skin off of the salmon. This is great for the birds, foxes and other animals that get to eat the other parts of the salmon that the bears will leave behind. This is nature’s way of giving back to the other animals in Alaska. It’s good that the bears do this, because the salmon skin is much higher in fats than the meat portions of the fish. So the bear is getting a high concentration of fat from the skins of salmon and bears need this to help survive the long cold winters of Alaska; when they take a long nap and hibernate for the winter. I’m sure there is no FDA approved diet drug like alli available to these bears in Alaska and a drug like that reduces the fat absorption in the body and this isn’t what the bears need. They need all of the fat they can get and their taste buds actually crave the high fatty makeup of salmon skins and the bears will only catch the salmon to eat their skins. Bears will eat the whole salmon but once they are full, they will continue to catch them and only eat their skins. I’m sure the other animals in the area are grateful for this and they don’t have the fish catching skills to land their own dinner, so they enjoy the bear’s leftovers from their process of only eating the salmon skins.

Hurricane Ike that struck the coast of Texas a couple of weeks back is still causing problems in the area of Houston and the problems are being felt as far away as Nashville and Atlanta, Georgia. No gas is what people are finding at the gas stations in many areas of the southeast. There just aren’t enough moving trucks to keep up with the demand of gas for people in the Atlanta area and many gas stations are out of gas. As soon as a truck does bring in a new supply, the lines quickly get long and in a matter of a few hours, all of the new gas is gone. Many people are trying to play it safe, so when they do get a chance to fill up, they are buying more gas than they normally would. This is causing many problems and folks are driving their cars on empty right now. We keep hearing that this problem will fix itself in the next day or two, but that hasn’t happen so far. Too many people around Atlanta need gas right now and they aren’t finding it at their nearest gas station and they are burning more gas looking for the service station that does have gas. The problem is doing a domino like effect right now in Atlanta and stories coming from Nashville seem exactly the same for them, as it is for the people in Georgia.

If you live in Georgia and you can’t find a gas station that has gas available to sell; then don’t worry too much because you’re not alone. If you do find a place that has gas, I would not only recommend filling your tank up, but go buy a couple of gas cans and fill them up too. They tell us not to panic and over buying will make the problem worse. The only thing wrong with that advice, the people trying to save the gas for others are the same ones that don’t have any gas right now in their tanks. So go ahead and fill your tank up and get some in gas cans too and at least you will have gas for your cars. Everyone living in Atlanta should be concerned about this problem and we just had this problem a few years back with Hurricane Katrina. So until they have gas at every gas station in metro Atlanta, be sure to buy all that you can for now and try to buy some for later in extra gas containers.

The USC football program has completed the toughest game they will have to face all year long. The Ohio State Buckeyes was the only team that could have beaten them and it wouldn’t have been considered that big of an upset. Now the USC team has won that game and they are going on a diet of easy teams for the rest of the year. I don’t think there is no way this team will be ranked high with the BCS rankings, but you never know when it comes to USC. This team doesn’t need any fat burners or extra exercise for their diets, because the weak competition is what their diet is all about. They will feed off teams that have far less talent than theirs and they will have to prove to the country they are the best team in football, by beating teams by 30 or more points per game. If USC fails to win games by 30 or more, it will show they aren’t really that great of a team. USC is very over rated in college football and I’m sure half of the teams playing in the SEC or ACC would prove this point. Unfortunately we won’t get to see them face any real competition and no team in the PAC 10 will be able to challenge them. If USC does manage to lose a game on their weak diet of competition, it should be safe to assume they will drop to the very bottom of the top 25 rankings. A loss for USC this year will certainly result in them falling out of the top 10 teams in college. I think college football fans will be rewarded this year with a National Title Game that actually has two good football teams and not a weak team like USC or Ohio State in the picture. USC’s diet on weak competition will come back to bite them later in the year.

I’m not a person that considers myself a democrat or republican, but I was horrified at Barack Obama’s refusal of John McCain’s idea to delay the debate. Barack Obama is running for president of the United States and his campaign has been centered around a time to heal for Americans. We need a president that is in touch with what’s going on in America and apparently Barack Obama isn’t aware of the biggest story in America right now. John McCain wanted to postpone the debate, so that he could focus on helping Congress come up with a solution or bailout for the current economy crisis that is facing this country. Barack Obama refused to move the debate back and said it’s more important that Americans know what type of person we would be putting in office in about 40 days instead of the economical concerns that face this nation right now.

Mr. Obama should know that America might not be here in 40 days and our country is on the brink of a depression. His refusal to not grant the McCain Camp a delay in this debate shows just how selfish he is and I think America got a chance to see Barack Obama’s true colors. Barack Obama is NOT the man you want in office come November or any other time in the future. He doesn’t care about Americans or the current economical crisis in the United States and I would not elect this man into office. I was someone that was sitting on the fence for this presidential election and I could have voted for either candidate. I was waiting for someone to do something positive to earn my vote. Instead I have saw a big negative with one of the candidates and it’s a good thing this came out before the election. We as Americans don’t need a Barack Obama type as president, because he views the debate with McCain more important than our economy right now. Americans should be more focused on the economy than any presidential election and John McCain apparently agrees with this too. Barack Obama messed up big time with his latest comments and I am not trying to earn votes for one candidate because I am a republican or democrat. I don’t vote along any party lines and I don’t affiliate with any party. I am an American and I vote on the best candidate or person for the job and in the case for president, John McCain is that man. I will not vote for someone that views a presidential debate more important than the situation with Wall Street and our economy right now; Barack Obama does think this way and he believes the debate is more important. I hope other Americans take notice of this and realize that Barack Obama is not the man we want in the White House come November.  

Our heart will beat many times over the course of our lives; if we do make it into our golden years. I think we would all be scared if we ever sat down and thought about all the work the heart does for us and just how important it helps us to live normal lives. So taking care of our tickers is a big thing and should be high on our list for all of us. Don’t wait until you get high cholesterol or high blood pressure to start taking better care of your hearts. The playoffs are in full swing in Nascar or at least their version of it. In no other sport do you have non playoff teams still competing with playoff teams, but only 12 drivers have a shot to win the big prize. So this is the playoff season for Nascar and who do you think has the best chance to win? The leader is currently Carl Edwards but only by 10 points over Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson. These 3 drivers have the best shot to win it all this year and 10 points is nothing on any given Sunday. Now the 4th spot is where we find Jeff Burton and he has 82 points to make up. It can be tough to make up that margin in one race and to jump 3 other drivers, but it’s still very early and Jeff Burton has a chance to control things from his end and make up the difference. The other drivers in the field are in the same boat, but the further you go down the standings the more help some of these other drivers will need from outside sources.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. lost a lot of ground and based on past experience, I don’t believe he has the driving skills to seriously win it all this year. Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart does have the driving skills and both of these drivers have the ability to make up some serious ground. I wouldn’t count Gordon or Stewart out yet, but they can afford to have any bad races down the stretch. They must continue to finish in the top 5 and 10 spots to set up a late season jump to 1st place. I think most will be picking Carl Edwards or Jimmie Johnson to win it all this year and I look for Tony Stewart or Jeff Gordon to be right at their heels when the last race in Florida gets here. It should be a fun race down the stretch and I think all Nascar fans are still tuning in to see how this one plays out.

The times for our country financially are bad right now. There really isn’t no other way to put it and times are hard for all of us at the moment. The thing that makes times so hard is always about money. If we have money in our pockets, we can handle a lot of bad things well, but when you give us problems and no money to solve them with, it makes it more difficult. I know around my parts of North Georgia, the best time to go fishing is during the spring time. It seems the fish are most active then and I have the best luck in the spring or just when the weather warms up enough to wear short sleeves. Once the dog days of summer get here, the fishing gets really bad. It’s too hot as a fisherman to go fishing a lot of the time and even when the air temperature cools down some in the day or in the evenings, the water temperature is still very warm and make the fish less active. So you would think things pick back up during the fall time, but it really never does.

This seems to be different in the ocean and around the Gulf of Mexico during the fall time. If you can go to the Gulf of Mexico during September, October and November and not have a hurricane in the area, you can do some good fishing. It’s just something about the fall season and the Gulf that makes fishing great. If you like to go deep sea fishing; then I would recommend an October trip around the Destin, Florida area for some really great fishing. I won’t be making a trip down to the Gulf this year to fish, but I would like to be in a position later on in life; where I make trips to Florida, Alabama and Mississippi to go fishing during the fall seasons. I’m sure the people that live around these areas in the South love to fish in October as much as I do and some might even be living there just for the great fishing they can do.

Do you have problems with squirrels? Or do you like the energetic little creatures? I will assume the people that love squirrels don’t have many around their yard or they might change their opinion on them. I live around several large oak trees and hickory nut trees and the squirrels build many nests in these trees around my house. I wouldn’t mind them so much if they stayed high up in these nests, but soon other squirrels need a place to live and that’s when they choose your house as theirs. This can create big problems and really squirrels are just rats with a big bushy tail. If squirrels find a way to nest in your attic or roof space, they will create havoc in the home. We have had our Christmas decorations destroyed due to squirrels being in the attic. They also can cause the roof to leak and they will gnaw out lots of places in the wood areas of your home. So if anyone ever thought to think of squirrels as a termite crossed with a rat; then they would be dead on with that statement.

If you have squirrels that are being a pest with your home or perhaps they just keep eating the seeds in the birdfeeder, you can do things to keep them away. I like watching them jump from tree to tree, but when they use my house as a tree it becomes a problem. The roof leaking, things getting destroyed in the attic and all of the noises they cause at all hours of the night is just the start of the problems; if squirrels decide to make your home theirs. You really need a squirrel repellent to stop the squirrels and prevent them from getting any fancy ideas. The local fair has come to town and it’s still exciting to see. It was a big thing when I was a kid and even as an adult you have to get excited about the fair. I might not even go to the fair, but just knowing that it’s here and this time of the year makes it exciting. We always get the fair during the month of September and we know that our long hot days will soon be replaced by the shorter and cooler days of fall. When the weather cools down it makes going outside and doing things more enjoyable. So the fair is a big sign of the changes that are on the horizon. I hope I get the chance to go at least one day and enjoy all the lights, laughter and foods that the fair provides. I know my twin nephews had a good time at the fair last year and they should enjoy it a lot more this year being a year older.

I know with the economy in bad shape like it is, many of us are finding ways to save money. In many cases our vehicles pay the price for this and we don’t get those oil changes and tune ups like we should be doing. We must keep our cars running right and all of us should not save money with our automobiles. Go ahead and take the hit now and get your cars and trucks all the things they need to help them run right. Could you imagine if you drove an expensive utility vehicle and having to pay today’s gas prices? What about someone that owns a Ferrari and needs to find some extra Ferrari parts to keep their car running? I know I would have trouble in either situation right now and I would like to own a smaller car for today’s times. Some people can afford these extra costs and it’s the reason they had the money to buy a utility vehicle or a Ferrari to begin with. I know my next vehicle will be gas friendly and that should be the priority of most people searching for a new or used car. Just remember to go ahead and bite the bullet with auto repairs and keep your vehicle in shape; so you can have dependable transportation and that will be one less thing to worry about!

There are some things that we might need but you don’t always have to buy it brand new. I think this is the case with tape drives and you really should look for a used one, before you go out and buy a new one. A good tape drive should last you a long time and a used tape drive can work just as good as a new one. I like to find bargains and hate overpaying for things. The 4th week has just went by and we continue to see teams from the ACC and SEC dominate the college ranks. These two divisions are just a speed ahead of all the other conferences in the country. The PAC 10 continues to get beat up on and today’s latest victim was Oregon taking a beating from Boise State. The final score looks a lot closer than what that game really was and Boise State was in control the entire time. Arizona State didn’t fare much better against a team that had to travel across the country to play them and the Georgia Bulldogs proved once again they are the best team in the nation right now. It was a tough game for Georgia having to face the Sun Devils, the desert conditions and the PAC 10 Officials that gave Arizona State every call on the field. The PAC 10 officiating is horrible and the Ohio State Buckeye fans can attest to this when they had to play the overrated USC Trojans early in the year. The PAC 10 Officials don’t even try to cover it up and they will help out their teams as much as possible. Georgia wins by 40+ if the game would have been called fairly, but a win is a win and Georgia now has 4 wins on the season. No way does USC stay ranked above them now. You have a team with 4 wins being compared to a team with 2 wins and the 4 win team was the preseason favorite going into the season. So USC will lose spots this week in the polls and things won’t get much better for them; because they have to win every game by 40 points now with the PAC 10 going down hill like it has been.

Black Saturday in the PAC 10? What? Now that has to be about the funniest thing I have heard all year long. The real college football fans and experts know that the PAC 10 is a weak division and most of those teams were only ranked in the top 25 to give the USC team quality wins. It’s a system that is so unfair but it has now backfired against USC and they are now out of the National Title picture (unless they win all games by 40+) and they haven’t even added a mark to the loss column yet.

So now we have to count East Carolina and the Oregon Mighty Ducks out of the top 25 teams in the country and here is a look at the real rankings of college football after 4 weeks of play.

That is a look at the real college football rankings in the country right now after we have seen these teams for 4 Saturdays now. I think the back to back shut-outs by BYU is very impressive and they might deserve to be a little higher up in the real rankings right now. Several good teams on the bubble of that 25th spot, but I don’t see how the Miami Hurricanes wouldn’t make a top 25 right now with all the young talent they have.

Week 5 in college football looks like a dandy and we will get to see more good games coming up next Saturday. There is about 8 or 9 teams that you could consider as one of the top 5 teams in the nation right now. The AP Poll and USA Today Poll really doesn’t reflect what’s being done on the football field and it should be interesting to see where a two win team that is currently listed as number 1 in the nation goes to; after teams like Georgia, BYU, Alabama and Missouri all have 4 wins. Rankings are suppose to be based on what we have seen and up-to-date with the way things look right this second. USC can’t be ranked number 1 in the country if you have quality teams playing quality games and winning on the road and these teams have twice as many wins. So this will be judgment week after week 4 and see how brave the voters are to knock USC off of their 2 win paper mountain that they are on. USC does not have quality wins! They did not beat the number 5 team in the nation and that team won by 18 against Troy at home today. A USC road win is impressive against Virginia (normally) but Virginia isn’t Virginia this year and they won 16 to 0 against Richmond, but got pounded by Connecticut 45 to 10. So USC has only 2 wins against 1 highly over ranked team and the other one got blew out by Connecticut. So let’s get those polls right this week and move USC out of the top spot on the rankings.

An interesting movie will soon be coming to a picture show near you. The name of the movie is Miracle at St. Anna and the way the previews look; you would think this is based on a true story. I’m not sure if this movie is a true story or not, but since Spike Lee is directing the movie, I guess that would probably rule out a true story line. Spike Lee is more concerned with the New York Knicks than directing movies and it shows in his work. He’s regarded by some as a good film maker but his movies really never do deliver. He’s had some nice movies and is still looking for the big block buster to make him as a film director. Maybe this newest picture that will be coming to a theater near you soon will be a miracle for Spike Lee. I do plan to see this movie, but I won’t be going out to spend the 8 bucks to see it. I will wait for it to come on satellite television and learn more about the story that revolves around a Tuscan Town and tells the story about the Miracle at St. Anna. Over the last couple of weeks I have been naming the top 5 angel songs to ever grace our airwaves. It could be any type of music and just have “angel” in the title to qualify. They are a lot of good angel songs out there but I could only name 5 in my countdown. So there was some good angel songs that didn’t make the countdown due to limited space, but the battle for the top angel song still hasn’t been decided.
