Fried Green Tomatoes

Living in the South means eating good food. We like to eat in the South and we have different things we eat and ways to prepare them; that some people might not understand. The Vidalia onion is one of things we treasure in Georgia. Nobody can grow this onion any place on the planet except in South Georgia. Something to do with the ground and it’s high in something that produces a very sweet tasting onion. So it makes the Vidalia a little more special to us.

One interesting treat we like to eat is Fried Green Tomatoes. Not many had heard of this before the movie Fried Green Tomatoes came out. Fried green tomatoes is a tasty treat that will go with just about any meal. You can fix fried chicken or pork chops and have fried green tomatoes as one of your side vegetables with your meal. They are real simple to prepare if you have never fixed them before. You first need a green tomatoe and it might be difficult to find them at the supermarket. Check with your local produce stand and during the spring and summer months they are usually pretty easy to find. If you still can’t find any, just go buy some tomatoe plants or seeds and grow your own. After you get some green tomatoes, just slice them up into thin slices and batter them with flour. Throw some lard or oil in the pan and toss on your battered green tomatoes. Dash a little salt on them and cook on medium heat. Leave them on one side long enough to brown and then flip them and brown on the other side. One you have both sides browned, just take them out and maybe lay them on a paper towel to help drain some of the grease off of them and they are ready to eat! If you have never tried fried green tomatoes, you really owe it to your self to try this southern cuisine!
