Who should win the National League MVP for Major League Baseball in 2007? They are a lot of good canidates out there and choosing just one will be tough. It’s not like that in the American League; as most people think Alex Rodriguez will run away with it. So it leaves people wondering who might get the top honors in the National League? The top canidates would have to be Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers, Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies, Matt Holiday of the Colorado Rockies, Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies, Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals, Chase Utley of the Philadelphia Phillies, Miguel Cabrera of the Florida Marlins, or Hanley Ramirez of the Florida Marlins.
Now one of those players will win the National League MVP in 2007, but which one? I have mixed feelings on who should win it and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I would expect this to be a very close race and whoever does win it, will not win it by much. If I had to list my canidates in order, this is the way I would do it.
I think Ryan Howard is the best player in 2007 and he gets my vote for the MVP. He helped the Phillies knock off the Mets late in the year and he had RBI’s in his last 6 games of the season. His stats are as good as anybody in baseball and he was injured for a portion of the season. If Ryan Howard would have played in 162 games, then he would have Alex Rodriguez type numbers and maybe even better? I have to list him as my top dog for the National League MVP.
Now Matt Holiday has had a great season like all the other canidates have. He has led the National League in batting average this year and I think that stat speaks volumes when you’re talking about the MVP award. He led the Rockies through impossible odds to get to the post season and he is beside Ryan Howard in my book. If you factor in that 163 rd game of the year (which it is a regular season game) I think that might have made the difference. He came up big in that thrilling game against the Padres and Matt Holiday winning the National League MVP award for 2007 might just be your best canidate!
I think the picture gets a little more cloudy when you go from them two names down to the next guy on the list. I would rank Prince Fielder as the 3rd best canidate for this year’s MVP award in the National League. The guy is young and almost led his team to the post season in 2007. Don’t worry Brewer fans, your team is young and only getting better. Keep your manager and you guys will see the post season in 2008.
The Phillies didn’t only have Ryan Howard, but they had Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley too. That is why the Phillies is in the post season. I can’t remember the last time you had 3 deserving canidates from one team to battle for the MVP award. I think this will hurt all 3 of them and the votes will get split up among them in the Philly area. So votes that could be going to Ryan Howard, might get stolen by Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley. I think this makes Matt Holiday the likely choice to win the award this year. I do put Jimmy Rollins 4th on my list behind Ryan Howard, Matt Holiday, and Prince Fielder.
1. Ryan Howard
2. Matt Holiday
3. Prince Fielder
4. Jimmy Rollins
5. Hanley Ramirez
6. Chase Utley
7. Albert Pujols
8. Miguel Cabrera
9. Jose Reyes
10. Barry Bonds
That is the way the top 10 should breakdown in this year’s race for the National League MVP. I think Ryan Howard will have trouble winning the award; since Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins will be stealing votes from him. So don’t be surprised to see Matt Holiday as your 2007 National League MVP.
